Best electric cars for towing
Electric motors tow beautifully. The problem is not capability, it is range — expect to lose a third or more.
An electric motor is close to ideal for towing — maximum torque from a standstill, no clutch to slip, no gear hunting on a climb. Pulling away with a caravan is genuinely easier than in a diesel.
The problem is entirely about range.
The range penalty
Expect 30% to 50% less range when towing, depending on:
- Weight of the trailer
- Frontal area, which matters more than weight at speed — a tall caravan is far worse than a heavy flat trailer
- Speed
- Terrain
A car with 250 miles of range becomes a 150-mile car with a light trailer, and can approach 125 with a large caravan.
What to check before buying
Approved towing capacity. Many EVs have none. This is often a type-approval or battery-protection decision rather than a strength limit, but it is legally binding either way.
Nose weight limit. Frequently the binding constraint with a caravan.
Whether a tow bar is factory or retrofit. Retrofits can affect warranty and, on some cars, parking sensor and safety system behaviour.
Real range, not quoted range. Then take a third off it.
The practical problem nobody mentions
Charging with a trailer attached.
Most rapid charging bays are designed for a car, not a car plus seven metres of caravan. You will frequently need to unhitch, which is tedious and occasionally impossible in a busy site.
Before a towing trip, identify pull-through charging sites on the route. They exist and they are worth planning around — this is the single biggest practical difference between towing and normal EV travel.
Planning a towing trip
- Take your real solo range and reduce by a third
- Plan stops at 60–70% of that, not at the limit
- Identify pull-through or end-bay sites
- Expect longer stops; sustained high-power towing warms the pack, which can slow the next charge
- Reduce speed — towing at 60 rather than 70 makes a substantial difference to range
Is it viable?
For short and medium tows, comfortably. For a long motorway haul with a large caravan, it takes real planning and it will be slower than the diesel equivalent.
The towing capability is not the limitation. The charging curve and the bay layout are.

Can every EV tow?
No. Many have no approved towing capacity at all, often for battery-protection or type-approval reasons rather than lack of strength. Check the specific model.
Does towing damage the battery?
No, but it draws sustained high power, which generates heat and can reduce charging speed at the next stop.
