Used EV buying guide: what to check before you commit
Battery health, warranty transfer and charging history — the three things that decide whether a used EV is a bargain or a liability.

A used EV can be excellent value. It can also be the one car purchase where a hidden problem is genuinely expensive, because the battery is a large fraction of the vehicle's worth.
The three things that matter
1. Battery state of health
This is the capacity the pack can still hold, against what it held new. Most modern EVs lose roughly 1–2% a year, front-loaded — a noticeable dip in the first year, then a slow decline.
How to check it:
- Some cars report it in the infotainment system
- A dealer diagnostic can read it
- Third-party apps read it over the OBD port on many models
- A full-charge range readout gives a rough proxy, though it reflects recent driving
A five-year-old car at 90% is healthy. The same car at 78% has had a hard life — heavy rapid charging, sustained high heat, or long periods sitting at 100%.
2. Warranty remaining
Battery warranties are typically 8 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first, and they transfer to subsequent owners.
The important detail: they usually guarantee against dropping below a capacity threshold, commonly 70%. That is a floor against failure, not a promise of no degradation. A pack at 75% is degraded but not a warranty claim.
Get the remaining term confirmed in writing for that specific vehicle.
3. Charging history
Not always knowable, but worth asking. A car rapid-charged almost exclusively, especially in a hot climate and often to 100%, will have aged faster than one home-charged to 80%.
Some cars log charging sessions. A one-owner car with a home charger installed is a good sign.
What matters less than you think
Mileage. EVs have far fewer wearing parts than combustion cars. High mileage from steady long runs is easier on a pack than low mileage with constant rapid charging.
Service history. Real, but thinner — there is no oil, no cambelt, no exhaust. Brake fluid, coolant and cabin filters are the main items.
What to inspect physically
- Tyres. EVs are heavy and torquey; they eat tyres. A car needing four is several hundred pounds you should negotiate.
- Brakes. Regenerative braking means discs get little use, and can corrode from underuse. Check for scoring and rust.
- Charge port. Look for damaged pins, a loose flap or melting around the contacts — the last is a serious warning sign.
- 12V battery. Frequently overlooked and a common cause of no-start faults.
- Cables. Confirm the supplied cable set. A replacement Type 2 cable is not cheap.
The test drive
- Start it with a known state of charge and see whether the range estimate is plausible
- Test rapid charging if you can — a session at a nearby charger tells you more than any other single check
- Listen for the heat pump or resistive heater cycling
- Check that regenerative braking modes work as described
The negotiation
Battery health is the strongest lever you have. If the pack is measurably below par for its age, that is a real reduction in the car's remaining value and a legitimate reason to move on price.
If the seller cannot or will not produce a state-of-health reading, treat that as information in itself.
