CCS, NACS and Type 2 — what actually plugs into what

Three connectors, two continents and a standards migration in progress. What fits your car, and the adapters worth owning.

Connector confusion is mostly a side effect of geography and timing. Different regions standardised at different moments, and one manufacturer built its own before any standard existed.

The short version

In the UK and Europe:

  • Type 2 for AC charging — home chargers, destination chargers, on-street posts
  • CCS2 for DC rapid charging — Type 2 with two extra high-current pins below it

Your car has one socket that takes both. That is the whole point of the Combined Charging System: the AC connector and the DC connector share the top half.

In the United States:

  • J1772 for AC charging on older and non-Tesla cars
  • CCS1 for DC rapid on most non-Tesla cars
  • NACS on Teslas, and increasingly on everything else

What NACS changes

NACS is the connector Tesla used, opened up and standardised. It handles both AC and DC in a single smaller plug, which is genuinely a better design than CCS1's bulky two-part arrangement.

Most major manufacturers have committed to it for the US market. In practice that means:

  • New US cars increasingly ship with a NACS port
  • CCS1 cars get adapter access to the Supercharger network
  • Both will coexist for years

None of this affects the UK or Europe, where CCS2 is established and staying.

Adapters worth owning

A note on what not to buy: adapters that convert between AC and DC, or that claim to let a Type 2 car use a CCS-only DC charger, do not work. The protocols are different and no passive adapter bridges them.

The practical test

Look at your car's charge port. If the socket has two large circular pins in a bulge below the main connector, you have CCS. If it is a single small round connector, you have NACS. If there is no lower section at all, the car is AC-only and cannot rapid charge.

That last case is rare on modern cars but common on early and city EVs — worth checking before buying used.

Common questions

Will my CCS car be obsolete when NACS takes over?

No. The migration is happening in the US, over years, and adapters work in both directions. UK and European CCS2 infrastructure is not migrating to NACS.

Can I use a Tesla Supercharger in a non-Tesla EV?

Increasingly yes. Many Supercharger sites are open to other brands, though pricing is usually higher for non-members. Availability varies by site and country.
