Charging cable organisers and storage

A charging cable is heavy, awkward and frequently wet. Where it lives is a small problem you solve once.

For untethered chargers

A cable bag. The single best value purchase in EV ownership. A wet, dirty cable loose in the boot is unpleasant, gets everything else dirty, and shortens the cable's life.

Look for something waterproof, with a stiff enough opening to feed a cable into one-handed, and small enough to actually fit in your boot.

A boot crate or tray. Contains the mess if a bag is too fussy for you.

For tethered chargers

A wall holster or hook. Most units include a basic one; aftermarket versions are usually better designed. The goal is keeping the connector off the ground and the cable off the drive.

A cable hanger for longer runs, so the cable is not dragged across gravel every time.

What to avoid

Tight coiling. Especially while charging. Coiled cable under load traps heat, and heat is what damages cable insulation. Loose figure-of-eight is kinder than a tight coil.

Leaving the connector on the ground. Water, grit and vehicle wheels are all bad for it, and the connector is the expensive part.

Cheap velcro straps that cut in. They crush the outer sheath over time.

A note on cable care

The cable is a consumable that should last years if treated reasonably:

• Keep the connector clean and dry
• Do not drive over it, obviously, but also do not park on the edge of it
• Inspect for cuts and exposed conductors occasionally
• Replace rather than repair anything damaged — this carries up to 32 A
