Ultra-rapid charging sites keep getting bigger
Multi-bay hubs are replacing single units at motorway sites. Bay count matters more to you than headline power.

Charging operators continue to shift from installing one or two units per site toward larger hubs with six, twelve or more ultra-rapid bays.
Why this matters more than peak power
A 350 kW charger is only useful if it is free when you arrive, and if your car can accept anything like that rate — which most cannot, and none can for the whole session.
Bay count is the more useful metric. A twelve-bay site at 150 kW is a better travelling experience than two bays at 350 kW, because the failure mode that actually ruins a journey is arriving to a queue or a broken unit.
What to look for on a route
- Multiple bays, so one fault is not a dead end
- Amenities, so the stop overlaps something you needed to do
- Pull-through bays if you tow — see best electric cars for towing
- Contactless payment, so no app and no signal is not a blocker
What has not changed
Rapid charging remains the most expensive way to buy energy for a car. Bigger hubs improve convenience and reliability, not price — the cost comparison is unaffected.
