What happens to your EV bill in winter

Cold weather does not raise the price of electricity. It raises how much of it you need per mile.

Winter charging costs more for one reason: the same journey needs more kilowatt-hours. The unit price is unchanged; the consumption is not.

The size of it

Our measurements across 14 cars found consumption rising by 12% to 43% below 5°C, depending mostly on whether the car has a heat pump.

At 10,000 miles a year with roughly four cold months, a 30% winter penalty adds around 10% to annual energy use. On a home off-peak tariff that is small in absolute terms. On rapid charging it is not.

Where it hurts most

If you charge on rapid chargers, the penalty compounds: you need more energy, at the most expensive rate, and cold packs charge more slowly so you also spend longer doing it.

If you charge at home off-peak, it is genuinely minor — a few pounds a month.

This is the same pattern as everything else in EV running costs: where you charge decides far more than what you drive.

What actually reduces it

Precondition while plugged in. The single most effective habit. Warming the cabin and pack from the wall rather than the battery is free range. See battery preconditioning.

Use seat and steering wheel heating. Heating a person costs a fraction of heating the cabin air.

Check tyre pressures. They fall in cold weather, and low pressure costs energy every mile.

Precondition before rapid stops. Reduces both time and, indirectly, cost.

Budgeting for it

Take your normal monthly charging cost and add a third for the cold months if your car has no heat pump, or around 15% if it does. Our charging cost calculator will do it precisely if you drop your winter efficiency figure in — most cars will show you what that actually is.
