Living with an EV in a cold climate
Cold costs range, slows charging and stiffens everything. All three are manageable with habits rather than hardware.

Electric cars work perfectly well in the cold. They just work differently, and a handful of habits cover most of it.
What actually changes
Range falls, by 12% to 43% below 5°C depending mostly on whether the car has a heat pump — our measurements are here.
Charging slows. A cold pack accepts far less current, so a rapid stop can take twice as long.
Regeneration is limited. A cold battery cannot absorb charge quickly, so regenerative braking is reduced until it warms. The car will feel like it is coasting more, and the friction brakes do more work.
Everything is stiffer. Tyres, dampers, door seals. Normal.
The habits that fix most of it
Precondition on the plug
The single most valuable habit. Warm the cabin and the pack from the wall before you unplug. That energy is not coming out of your range.
Most cars will do it on a schedule — set it once for your usual departure time.
Use seat and steering wheel heating
Heating a person costs a fraction of heating the cabin air. Drop the cabin target a few degrees and use direct heat instead.
Precondition before rapid charging
Navigate to the charger using the car's own system, or the car will not know to warm the pack. See battery preconditioning — this catches out more drivers than anything else.
Check tyre pressures monthly
They fall with temperature. Low pressure costs range and tyre life at exactly the time of year you can least afford it.
Charge to a higher percentage in winter
Not for battery health — simply because you need more energy for the same journey. Adjust your default upward in the cold months.
Parking
A garage helps, even an unheated one. A few degrees warmer overnight is a measurably better starting point.
Plugged in is better than not, even when full. The car can maintain pack temperature from the wall.
Buying implications
If you live somewhere genuinely cold, a heat pump is close to a requirement rather than an option — the range difference is large enough to change which journeys need a stop. Full reasoning here.
What not to worry about
Cold does not permanently degrade the battery. Range returns as temperatures rise. Heat is the enemy of long-term health, not cold — the care advice is in how to look after an EV battery.

Common questions
Does the cold permanently harm the battery?
No. Cold-weather range loss is temporary and returns in spring. Sustained heat is far harder on long-term battery health than cold.
