How to plan a long EV trip without stress
Stop more often for less time. Almost everything else about long-distance EV driving follows from that one rule.

The instinct from petrol driving is to fill up completely and drive until nearly empty. Applied to an EV, that instinct produces the slowest possible journey.
The one rule
Stop more often, for less time.
Charging is fastest when the battery is fairly empty and slows sharply as it fills. Two stops from 15% to 60% will usually beat one stop from 15% to 90%, because you spend all of your charging time in the steep part of the curve.

Planning the route
Use the car's own navigation if it has route planning. It knows the battery state, it can precondition, and its estimates account for elevation and speed in a way a phone app cannot.
Identify more chargers than you need. Knowing the next two options along the route means a busy or broken site is a detour, not a crisis.
Prefer sites with multiple units. A single-charger site is a single point of failure.
Note what is around the charger. A stop next to food and a toilet is time you were going to spend anyway. That is the real trick to painless long-distance EV driving — overlapping the charge with something you needed to do.
On the road
Motorway speed costs range disproportionately. Aerodynamic drag rises with the square of speed, so 70 mph uses substantially more energy per mile than 60. On a long run, a small speed reduction can remove an entire stop.
Precondition before rapid charging. In cold weather this is the difference between a 25-minute and a 50-minute stop.
Do not chase 100%. Unplug when the rate drops off, unless the next leg genuinely needs the range.
Winter
Expect meaningfully less range — how much depends heavily on whether your car has a heat pump. We measured the spread across 14 cars and it ran from −12% to −43%.
Precondition the cabin while still plugged in at home. That energy comes from the wall rather than the battery, and it is free range.
Budgeting the cost

The honest summary
A long EV trip takes longer than the same trip in a petrol car. Not dramatically, if you plan it properly — but it does, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something. Planned well, the stops land where you wanted to stop anyway.

Common questions
Should I charge to 100% before setting off?
From home, yes if you need the range — it is cheap and you are asleep anyway. On the road, almost never; the last 20% costs more time than the extra range saves.
How much buffer should I leave?
Plan to arrive at each charger with 10–15%. That covers a closed site or a diversion without turning into an emergency.
