UK public chargepoints pass a new milestone
Connector numbers keep climbing, but the useful figure is rapid connectors per site, not the national total.

The UK's public charging network continues to expand, with total connector counts rising steadily across all speed bands.
Why the headline number misleads
A national connector total counts a 7 kW lamp-post unit the same as a 350 kW motorway bay. Those solve completely different problems.
The figures worth watching are:
- Rapid and ultra-rapid connectors, which determine long-distance viability
- Connectors per site, because a single-charger site is a single point of failure
- Geographic distribution, which remains uneven
What it means in practice
More connectors is genuinely good news, particularly the growth in multi-bay rapid sites where a busy or broken unit is an inconvenience rather than a dead end.
It changes little about cost. Rapid charging remains the most expensive way to buy energy for a car, and the gap to home charging is unaffected by how many units exist.
If you rely on public charging
Growth helps most on routes, less so at home. If you have no off-street parking, the more useful developments are on-street provision and workplace charging — covered in charging without a driveway.
